Life has come full circle for Dick Doré. Born and raised on the family-owned Rancho Tinaquaic, this sixth generation Santa Barbara County resident returned to his roots in 1985 by establishing Foxen with long-time friend, Bill Wathen. After working as a banker in the late sixties and seventies, this University of California at Santa Barbara graduate gave up his nine-to-five job and moved his young family to Europe. Over the next year and a half, Dick traveled the back roads of France, Italy and Spain, where he also developed a love of wine.

Dick and his family returned to the Rancho Tinaquaic, which was purchased by his great-great grandfather and Santa Barbara County pioneer Benjamin Foxen in 1837 in the late seventies. At that time the Santa Barbara County wine industry was just emerging. With his passion for great wines firmly established, he initially worked to support his family, which included working for the Tepusquet Mesa Vineyard. It was here that Dick and Bill’s employment paths crossed and their friendship was solidified.

Dick makes his home in the Santa Ynez Valley, where he lives with his wife, Jenny. Together, they form Foxen’s sales force. When he is not on the road selling Foxen wine and hosting dinners, Dick’s free time is spent nurturing their seven-acre Williamson-Doré Vineyard in the Santa Ynez Valley, tending his vegetable garden or pruning his olive trees, and occasionally playing golf.

Bill Wathen and Dick Doré have been making wine together since 1985, when they founded Foxen Winery & Vineyard at the historic Rancho Tinaquaic in Northern Santa Barbara County. Since that time their dedication has remained the same: the creation of small production, sustainably-farmed, vineyard-focused wines using a straightforward and minimalist approach to winemaking.

The winery is named in memory of William Benjamin Foxen, and English sea captain and Dick’s great-great grandfather. Benjamin Foxen came to Santa Barbara in the early 1800’s and purchased the historic Rancho Tinaquaic in 1837 with a Mexican Land Grant that totaled nearly 9000 acres, that comprised most of what is now known as Foxen Canyon. Captain Foxen adopted the distinctive anchor as his ranch cattle brand, which became the trademark of the Foxen Vineyard & Winery. We are proud that we have made our home on the now 2000-acre Rancho Tinaquaic, which remains in family hands.

In 2009 we completed our new solar-powered winery and tasting room, and our beloved historic "Shack" was renamed foxen 7200, and focuses on our Bordeaux and Italian-style wines under a newly designed label. Our Burgundy and Rhône-style wines are showcased at our new location just up the road.

2014 marks the 30th harvest for the Foxen Boys.

A Houston Native, Marcus spent much of his youth traveling which led to a deep love of food and wine culture. After curetting Houston’s first Champagne-focused wine list in Houston at Cha, Marcus took a position working under Charles Clark at Ibiza Food & Wine bar. Marcus procured Ibiza’s first award-winning wine list and was able to further understand and focus on the inspiring relationship between wine and food.
