Wines We Love with Our Food
Nicolas Perrin Viognier, Rhone Valley 2012
This viognier has a lovely pale golden color with bright undertones. Very aromatic on the nose, it offers wonderful notes of citrus fruit and white flowers. On the palate, the style of the wine is quite lean, tense and mineral as opposed to a more buttery and full bodied style of viognier. The finish is long and mouthwatering with fabulous flavours of apple and almond.
Foxen Ernesto Wickenden Vineyard Chenin Blanc, Santa Maria Valley 2012
This 3-acre vineyard in the heart of the Santa Maria Bench was planted 43 years ago, and was named after Dick Doré’s great uncle, Ernesto Wickenden. The wine is bright and lively, and displays notes of citrus, pear and melon, with a long, clean “minerally” finish.
Sanglier Cellars Blanc du Tusque Viog./Mars./Rous., Sonoma County 2012
The developing nose is clean and youthful with aromas of stone and tropical fruits and ripe melon. Floral notes, along with apple cider and cotton candy, compliment the rich core of fruit. On the palate are flavors of stone and tropical fruits, white flowers and a touch of vanilla.
Château Lassègue Bordeaux Blend Grand Cru, Saint-Emilion, France 2006
The 2006 vintage is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon and has a beautiful fruit nose that’s clean and fresh. In the mouth, the remarkable balance gives a fairly rare sensation of harmony. It is firm, but not dry, and the tannins indicate good aging potential.
Mercer Estate Reserve Ode to Brothers GSM, Horse Heaven Hills 2010
A beautifully balanced blend of three classic Rhone Varietals – Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre – allows the character of each to display its contribution to the blend. The Grenache brings ripe currant and raspberries and keeps the mouthfeel bright and lithe. The Syrah brings volume and complex aromas of smoke and cured meat. Mourvedre supplies white pepper and minerality. This wine ages well, further melding the grape’s aromas and flavor, developing complex aged notes.
Porter Creek Old Vine Carignane, Mendocino County 2011
The depth of character that comes from these very old vines lends to a wine that more than amply stands on its own. Like previous vintages this wine shows dark ripe fruits on the nose and soft tannins, but with more concentration due to the extremely low yield of one ton per acre.
