Date Night at Brennan’s
If you’re like me, spending less time in the kitchen during the summer sounds delicious.
(That’s not to say I’ll have cereal for dinner… even when I had an odd fixation with Cheerios back in college that didn’t fly). But I think light, easy, home-cooked meals are 100% the way to go over these next few toasty months.
Unless you can go out instead.
It’s simultaneously a blessing and curse that we have so many incredible restaurants to nibble our way through in Houston. A friend recently told me there are over 7000 restaurants on Westheimer alone. It can blow your mind and waistline.
Admittedly my champagne taste often loses out to my beer money when dining out, but every once in a while a splurge is in order. Like this. It’s an indulgent event tailor-fit for fellow foodies (whether you like turtle soup or not).
Brennan’s is offering a summer series of cooking classes designed for couples to enjoy romantic dinners while learning a thing or two about inspired Creole cuisine. Executive Chef Danny Trace offers his expertise from twenty-plus years in the field, along with a three-course meal that’s artfully paired with wine. The $150 per couple date is a production that’s complete with cameras and TVs setup in the dining room. They’ve got jokes too.
“Just taste your food… unless you don’t like your friends,” was Chef Danny’s dryly-delivered response to my inquiry for a juicy entertaining tip.
The once-a-month affair features a menu which fuses ethnic flair into classic New Orleans-style cuisine. The next class/dinner is Friday and it will work Spanish influence into dabblings like Crawfish Empanada and Caldo de Marisco (Seafood Bouillabaisse with calamari, redfish and shrimp in a saffron lobster broth) and then a peachy dessert.
When I asked Chef Danny about the foods’ affects (cuz that’s my shtick) he said: “It will make you feel happy.”
Just the prospect of a date night gets me.
