Two Houston restaurants – Brennan's of Houston and State of Grace -- have made a list of the 50 Best Southern Restaurants in America for 2018.
The list, released by OpenTable Tuesday, was generated from more than 12 million verified OpenTable reviews for more than 27,000 restaurants across the country collected between June 1, 2017 and May 31, 2018. The restaurants in the Southern cuisine category were scored and sorted according to their overall food rating.
Brennan's of Houston, as most local diners know, is a city icon; a bastion of Texas-influenced haute Creole cuisine from the Brennan's clan of New Orleans of Commander's Palace fame. The restaurant, which last year marked its 50th anniversary, is under the longtime guidance of proprietor Alex Brennan-Martin, whose mother was the legendary New Orleans restaurateur Ella Brennan.
State of Grace has found a devoted following since Atlanta-based restaurateur Ford Fry opened the River Oaks restaurant in 2015 serving a unique merger of Southern-influenced fare marked by his own Houston upbringing. The restaurant continues its indulgent exploration of local foods with a Southern bent under the direction of executive chef Bobby Matos. Fry, meanwhile, is readying the opening of two concepts, La Lucha in the former Hunky Dory space, and Superica, his Tex-Mex concept in the adjacent Bernadine's space. They're expected to open in late August.
The two Houston restaurants find themselves in great Southern company. Other restaurants making the list include Circa 1886 in Charleston, SC; Dogwood Southern Table and Bar in Charlotte, NC; Highlands Bar & Grill in Birmingham, Ala.; Midtown Café in Nashville; and a slew of New Orleans restaurants including Boucherie, Atchafalaya Restaurant, Carrollton Market, Mr. B's Bistro, Muriel's Jackson Square, Restaurant R'evolution, Restaurant Rebirth and Willa Jean.
