Stretch Your Dollar at Houston Restaurant Weeks

Friday, August 01, 2014

Foodies rejoice - August 1 is the start of Houston Restaurant Weeks!

The month-long event comes once a year and is a great bargain for diners, while providing meals for those in need through the Houston Food Bank.

One of the participating restaurants is Brennan's in Midtown, known for its Creole cuisine. Executive chef Danny Trace says the restaurant is thrilled to be part of Houston's Restaurant Weeks, offering diners the fine dining experience at a discounted price.

"Restaurant weeks helps build memories and because of that we get a lot of new faces in and they will return for celebrations," Trace said. "This is one of the dishes we are going to highlight on the menu, Texas pecan crusted catfish."

The money that is raised for the Houston Food Bank during the four weeks helps feed the hungry. Since its inception in 2003, the event has raised $4.3 million, which translates to 12.9 million meals in Houston.

The Houston Food Bank says there are more than 200 participating restaurants this year.

"The restaurants are typically seeing the customers maybe they have not seen before because the customers are getting such a good deal," said Heather Icenogle with the Houston Food Bank.

Prices vary depending on when you dine and each restaurant will have a special menu to choose from.

2-3 COURSE LUNCH - $20

"For lunch, $3 is donated to the food bank; for brunch $4 dollars; for $35 dinner, $5 is donated; for $45 dinner, $7 is donated," Icenogle said.

Make sure you make reservations, because restaurants will fill up, especially on Friday and Saturday nights.

"When you make the reservation, tell them you are making a reservation for Houston Restaurant Week," said Icenogle.

Almost all restaurants will have a special Restaurant Weeks menu online that you can preview before you make your decision.

Once you arrive to dine, let them know you are participating in the Restaurant Weeks menu so they can offer you the menu before you sit down.

Don't forget to ask if there are any other specials, such as drink and dessert for the event. Also, be sure to tip your servers.
