Cookbook Release & Four-Course Wine Dinner with Sarah Grueneberg and Chris Shepherd

Our Home & Away series celebrating Brennan's 55th anniversary continues as we welcome two very special chefs back to the Brennan’s kitchen for a four-course wine dinner on Tues., Nov. 29, and Wed., Nov. 30.

Esteemed culinary alumni and cookbook authors Chef Sarah Grueneberg of Monteverde in Chicago (2017 James Beard Award for Best Chef: Great Lakes) and Houston's own Chef Chris Shepherd (2014 James Beard Award for Best Chef: Southwest) are joining their long-time friends and mentors, Chef Carl Walker and Chef Jose Arevalo, for two nights in celebration of the release of Chef Sarah's new cookbook, Listen to Your Vegetables.

The event will feature a delicious four-course dinner with wines paired by Chef Chris Shepherd and Brennan’s Wine Guy Rich Carter, plus cooking tips from each chef, and a signed copy of Chef Sarah's new cookbook.

Chef Sarah Grueneberg
Chef/Partner, Monteverde Restaurant & Pastificio in Chicago’s West Loop

Upon graduating from culinary school in 2001, Sarah started her career-changing job with Brennan’s of Houston and two years later was named the restaurant’s youngest female sous chef. Sarah has traveled throughout Italy, Asia, Europe, and the U.S., which has inspired her culinary approach of “following the food” and truly understanding a dish by knowing the people and culture that created it.

In 2017, Sarah received the James Beard Award for Best Chef: Great Lakes and was a semifinalist for Outstanding Chef in the 2019 and 2020 awards. She has been a competitor and finalist on Bravo’s Top Chef: Texas and Food Network’s Iron Chef Gauntlet.  Sarah was also named Rising Star Chef by Chicago Social magazine in 2009 and 2016 and Chef of the Year by Eater Chicago in 2011.

Chef Chris Shepherd
Founding Director & Honorary Chairman, Southern Smoke Foundation

Chris began his fine dining career at Brennan’s of Houston, where he spent seven years in the kitchen before running the wine program for two years. He left Brennan’s in 2006 to open Catalan Food & Wine, which was named one of Esquire’s Best New Restaurants in America that same year.

Chris was named James Beard Award for Best Chef: Southwest in 2014.  In 2019 he was named as James Beard Semifinalist for Outstanding Chef and Robb Report‘s Chef of the Year. Chris’ first cookbook, Cook Like a Local: Flavors that Will Change the Way You Cook—and See the World, was published by Clarkson Potter in September 2019 and was nominated for a 2020 James Beard Foundation Cookbook Award.
